Clemson Football: WR Depth Chart in Justyn Ross’s absence
Clemson football will be without its top WR in Justyn Ross
Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney told the media during a Zoom press conference Monday afternoon that WR Justyn Ross would miss the 2020 season with a neck injury.
Ross, who was suffering from stinger-like symptoms in the spring, had an X-Ray that revealed he was born with ‘congenital fusion’ and is slated to have surgery this Friday to address the problem.
The loss is certainly a big blow for Clemson football.
The top two wide receivers from the 2019 season- Ross and Tee Higgins– will now not play this season as Higgins has moved onto the NFL and Ross will be rehabbing an injury.
As we head into the 2020 Clemson football season, here’s a look at the projected wide receiver depth chart in Ross’s absence.
Projected WR Depth Chart for the 2020 Clemson football team
X- Joseph Ngata
- E.J. Williams
- Ajou Ajou
There’s plenty of talent and not much experience when it comes to this depth chart.
Amari Rodgers will man the ‘field’ position and Cornell Powell seems to have an inside track on the slot. Ross was originally the starter at the ‘boundary’ spot, but that will likely be given to sophomore Joseph Ngata now.
Fellow sophomore Frank Ladson Jr. could also compete for starter reps, but I think Ngata’s size makes him a more likely candidate to play the boundary on a more regular basis.
We’re going to see those four- Ladson Jr., Powell, Rodgers and Ngata- get the majority of the snaps at the wide receiver position, but there’s also no doubt now that redshirt freshman Brannon Spector will see the field quite a bit, as well as true-freshmen E.J. Williams and Ajou Ajou.
The Tigers are going to rely upon these young guys stepping up and creating depth to have a successful season. There won’t be an opportunity for much of a learning curve, so they’ll have to come out ready to contribute from Day 1.
