Clemson football picked up a huge commitment today from a five star running back.

Running back Will Shipley out of Matthews, NC announced his commitment to Clemson football via twitter this afternoon. He chose the Tigers over Alabama, Duke, Florida, and Georgia.

Adding another five-star commitment to the 2021 class is a big pickup for the Tigers, who are quickly becoming a destination for elite running backs. He will join four-star running back Phil Mafah in the 2021 class.

According to the 247Sports Composite, he is the top-rated all-purpose back in the country, the top player out of the state of North Carolina, and the 24th best recruit in the country. The 247Sports Composite ranking is made up of all other ranking sites in order to come up with one overall number for each player.

The Clemson football 2021 class has an average per player ranking of .9540, for perspective, the 2020 class had a per player ranking of .9345 per class. While the Clemson 2021 class currently sits in fourth place overall, their per player average is the highest in the country and if it holds would be the highest ever in the ranking era.

In 2021, Clemson football will be looking at the backfield of some highly elite high school running backs.

  • Will Shipley – 5-star Freshman
  • Demarkcus Bowman – 5-star sophomore
  • Phil Mafah – 4-star Freshman
  • Lyn-J Dixon – 4-star Senior
  • Kobe Pryor – 3-star Sophmore
  • Chez Mellusi – 3-star Junior
  • Michel Dukes – 3-star Junior

With just 10 commitments for the 2021 class, Coach Dabo Swinney and his coaches have a lot of work to do, but as we have seen over the last decade, this class will fill out nicely and address the needs that the program will have.

Next. Clemson athletics should be doing more during this unprecedented time. dark

Clemson has proven that winning singing day championships mean nothing on the field but it is still great when elite players have determined that wearing orange and purple for the rest of their lives is what is best for them.
