Clemson football: Gage Cervenka should have signed by now

It is highly perplexing that former Clemson football offensive lineman, Gage Cervenka, did not sign an undrafted free agent contract with an NFL team after the draft.

If you understand the nuances of the NFL, then Gage not being drafted should not be a shock. He struggled at times against opponents that he should not have and he was most effective in run blocking, which is something that NFL coaches and scouts don’t care about anymore because the NFL is a passing league.

Cervenka had one shot to prove himself worthy and that was at Clemson’s pro-day and he failed to do so, he was not even able to match his own personal best in the 225 bench press. Clemson was one of just a few schools that had an actual pro-day and all 32 NFL teams had scouts, front office personnel, or coaches in attendance.

That said, Gage is good enough to have at least received a post-draft offseason contract. Each team carries a 90 man offseason roster and you won’t find many guards on those expanded rosters that are better than he is.

If he decides that football is still worth chasing, he always has the Canadian route as well. While it is not the easiest route to take, there have been many before that have gone to Canada first and showed that they can play at a higher level before coming back and getting their NFL shot.

While most fans believe that he is good enough for the NFL, we have seen it many times over the last five to ten years that some just aren’t NFL products.

Clemson football greats like Tajh Boyd, Eric Mac Lain, and Ben Boulware all deserved better than they got from the NFL and all were better in a Tiger uniform. The reality of the NFL is harsh but there is no doubt that Gage Cervenka deserves at least one opportunity to show he belongs and not the silence that he is getting.
