Clemson football: Can Tyler Davis take the next step in 2020

Clemson football sophomore defensive tackle Tyler Davis has to take the next step and develop into the game wrecker that Clemson is accustomed to having in the middle of its defensive line.

No one expected the Clemson football defensive line to be any good in 2019 and instead what we got to see was a true freshman from Apopka, Florida come in as a true freshman and start at defensive tackle. Not only did open everyone’s eyes during camp but he turned a lot of heads around the ACC. As we all know now, he was the first true freshman to start at defensive tackle for Clemson since Jeff Mills in 1974.

He accomplished something that William Perry, Grady Jarrett, Christian Wilkins or Dexter Lawrence were unable to do. Now, he has to show the maturity and put his own headlines aside, work harder than he did coming in and take the next step and truly anchor the Clemson defense.

If Tyler Davis is caught reading his own headlines, freshman defensive tackles Bryan Bresee and Demonta Capehart along with Jordan Williams, Nyles Pickney and Darnell Jefferies will be there to pass him on the depth chart.

There is little doubt that Davis can be the greatest tackle in Clemson football history. Given some of the legendary names listed above, he is already in a category with program legends. He ended his freshman campaign with double-digit tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks, he was also one of a few bright spots in the national title game against LSU.

In 2020, he needs to average a tackle for loss per game as well as end with double-digit sacks, both of which he is capable of doing. The more he can get going upfront the better it will help Clemson’s back seven, which will need time to help their young players adjust to increased playing time with all the new faces that are certain to see the field.

Davis has the talent to be the greatest in Clemson football history, but does he have the work ethic and focus to take the next step and become the game wrecker that Clemson is looking for upfront?
