Clemson Football: Trevor Lawrence ranked No. 1 player in the nation
Three Clemson football players were ranked inside the top-50 of the nation in Athlon Sports’ way-too-early list ranking the best players.
Athlon Sports released its way-too-early list ranking the top-50 players in the nation and three Clemson football players were included.
QB Trevor Lawrence was named the No. 1 player in the nation, according to the publication, and RB Travis Etienne at No. 6, leading all running backs.
Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ top-10:
- QB Trevor Lawrence (Clemson)
- QB Justin Fields (Ohio State)
- OT Penei Sewell (Oregon)
- CB Derek Stingley Jr. (LSU)
- WR Ja’Marr Chase (LSU)
- RB Travis Etienne (Clemson)
- RB Chuba Hubbard (Oklahoma State)
- LB Micah Parsons (Penn State)
- WR Rondale Moore (Purdue)
- QB Sam Howell (UNC)
In addition to Lawrence and Etienne ranked inside the top-10, Clemson football WR Justyn Ross is ranked No. 34. The publication also noted DT Tyler Davis and OT Jackson Carman as players who just missed being ranked.
Thoughts:
The top-10 is pretty solid, in my opinion, but it’s certainly ridiculous to not include Jackson Carman as one of the top offensive tackles in the country.
Athlon has seven offensive linemen included in the list and Carman isn’t one of them, though he may have the highest upside of any offensive tackle in the country. Sophomore DT Tyler Davis and WR Amari Rodgers are also guys that likely should’ve been included.
It is interesting to see national publications recognizing Lawrence as the top player in the country.
They’re following suit with a number of NFL scouts who have said that Lawrence will be the top prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft and it’s nice to see the QB receive some positive rankings after being negatively criticized for the vast majority of the 2019 season.
Travis Etienne certainly deserves the top RB spot in the nation and it will be interesting to see how he is able to improve and leave a legacy with one final season in the Clemson football program.
