The Clemson football program added a neutral-site game against Georgia in 2021, but that means one less home game for the Tiger faithful.

It was confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the Clemson football program would be adding the Georgia Bulldogs to the 2021 schedule and dropping a home game with the Wyoming Cowboys.

The Tigers and Bulldogs will open up the 2021 season on Sept. 4 in Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte as a neutral-site match-up.

2021 will be the first time in quite a while that we’ll only see six Clemson football games in Death Valley instead of seven. The Tigers will have home games against SC State, UConn, Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.

There are many pros and cons to the scheduling change.

Cons:

  • Clemson football serves as an economic driver for local businesses and organizations. One less Saturday with 80,000+ people heading into Death Valley means they’ll miss out on some business.
  • Tiger fans love more than just great match-ups. They love the Clemson family. They love tailgating and the atmosphere that comes with game day. They’ll only get that six times instead of seven.
  • Playing a neutral-site game against a likely top-10 program certainly gives Clemson a greater chance of losing and potentially being eliminated from CFB Playoff contention.

Pros:

  • There are still six Saturdays to drive the economy in Clemson.
  • Tiger fans will have an exciting trip to Charlotte (Bank of America Stadium) for a unique neutral-site game. There’s nothing wrong with a little change in scenery.
  • It’s not just about the trip, this game will be showcased nationally and give Clemson a quality opponent to build a CFB Playoff resume on early in the season.
  • This renews the rivalry with Georgia. The two programs haven’t faced each other since 2014.
  • This was needed to strengthen the overall schedule.

Overall, Clemson football fans have to realize that this was a needed change and will be worth the one less Saturday in Death Valley. After all, would you rather travel to Charlotte and see the Tigers take on Georgia? Or see Wyoming in Death Valley?

This is going to be a fun atmosphere and, though everyone would rather have seven home games, it’s worth the sacrifice to strengthen the schedule and gain a quality opponent.
