NFL Draft Analyst Mel Kiper says he would take Joe Burrow over Trevor Lawrence in the latest hilarious take directed at Clemson football.

NFL Draft Analyst Mel Kiper appeared on ESPN to talk about the upcoming NFL Draft and made an interesting statement for Clemson football fans.

Though Trevor Lawrence is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Kiper said that if Lawrence could come out in 2020, he would still take Joe Burrow of LSU over Lawrence.

Why?

Kiper explained that the main reason he’d take Burrow over Lawrence is because Clemson football hasn’t played a difficult schedule. He said that Burrow has played “elite” teams and been phenomenal. He said that Burrow has been under a microscope, but that Lawrence hasn’t been tested against elite opponents.

It should be noted that he did say that we saw Trevor Lawrence excel against elite opponents last year.

That being said, there shouldn’t be much stock put into anything Kiper says when it comes to evaluating talent or skill.

Most Clemson football fans should remember that this is the same draft analyst who said Mitchell Trubisky (UNC) should be drafted over Deshaun Watson. Not only did he say that, he even believed the talent gap between the two quarterbacks wasn’t even all that close. We all see how that worked out.

You can look at Kiper’s draft board year-after-year and see holes and questionable selections.

The truth is this: It’s one thing to talk about the Heisman Trophy. It’s a different thing to talk about NFL talent.

Joe Burrow has had a phenomenal season and has looked extremely talented leading LSU to its perfect run. That being said, he also had a couple of seasons before the transfer where he didn’t look impressive. Burrow has the traits to become an elite NFL quarterback, but there’s just a difference between his raw talent and what Trevor Lawrence possesses.

Lawrence has the stronger arm. He has the better build. He possesses the football IQ. These are things NFL scouts are going to look at, more so than if you put up elite stats or if you won the Heisman Trophy.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter. Lawrence still has another year with Clemson football and still will likely be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
