Clemson Football: Kelly Bryant suffers injury after being hit low
By Barry Shuck
Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant was injured after being hit low in the Missouri Tigers’ match up with the Troy Trojans Saturday afternoon.
Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant was quietly having a banner year for his new team, the Missouri Tigers. On Saturday in a 42-10 blowout win over the Troy Trojans, Bryant was injured in the first half and did not return to the game.
Missouri was up 35-7 with less than a minute to play in the first half. Bryant dropped back to pass from the seven-yard line of Troy and found Tigers’ wide receiver Jalen Knox for the touchdown. However, on the toss Trojans defensive lineman Travis Salio had beaten left guard Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms and then dove at Bryant low – and late.
The impact occurred between the knee and ankle to which Bryant’s shin appeared to collapse with the blow.
The referee immediately chunked the flag, but it was too late for Bryant who was on the field obviously in pain with either a knee or ankle issue.

The penalty was an obvious roughing-the-passer penalty, which did little to penalize Troy because the play resulted in a touchdown. In the meanwhile, Bryant was carted off the field and did not return for the remainder of the contest. The play itself has brung utter disgust among viewers and around social media.
For his brief appearance in the game, Bryant was 12-of-19 for 221 passing yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also rushed six times for 20 yards, which included a three-yard TD scamper in the first quarter.
So far this season, Bryant has 145 attempts with 94 completions, 1,246 yards with 11 TDs, three INTs, and a 149.6 quarterback rating.
Bryant had transferred to Missouri after being named the 2018 starting quarterback for Clemson and then was replaced by Trevor Lawrence.
Bryant took advantage of college football’s new rule that allows a player to redshirt and sit out their senior season after playing a maximum of four games in a single season. He was able to complete the transfer once it was apparent Lawrence would remain the Tigers’ starter and become a graduate transfer which enabled him to play immediately instead of having to sit out a full season.
Missouri is now 4-1 in the tumultuous SEC Eastern Division which features a pair of unbeaten squads in the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (5-0-0) and the Florida Gators (6-0-0).
