Clemson Football: Tigers release 2019 season-opening depth chart
The Clemson football coaching staff released the 2019 season-opening depth chart. Here’s a look at where the Tigers fall heading into the Georgia Tech game.
The 2019 Clemson football season will kickoff Thursday evening at home against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
As the Tigers head into the season opener, the coaching staff released the 2019 depth chart following fall camp.
Here’s a look at some of our thoughts and some of the key takeaways from the depth chart, beginning with the offense.
Offense:
The starters on the 2019 Clemson football offense for the opening game are pretty much what we expected. Trevor Lawrence at QB, Travis Etienne at RB, Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins at WR. Jackson Carman won the spot at left tackle.
Diondre Overton earned the starting spot at the slot wide receiver position with TJ Chase listed as the backup. Freshman Joseph Ngata is listed as Tee Higgins’ backup with Cornell Powell and then Frank Ladson Jr. listed as the backups behind Ross, though it’s expected we’ll see the receivers rotate.
Freshman Taisun Phommachanh is listed as the third-string QB and Ben Batson isn’t listed on the depth chart at the position.
At running back, Lyn-J Dixon is listed as the second-stringer with Darien Rencher as the third-string. Neither freshman (Chez Mellusi or Michel Dukes) are listed on the depth chart.
Defense:
As of right now, the more interesting spots on the depth chart happen along the defensive line. Logan Rudolph is listed as a co-starter at both defensive end positions while Xavier Thomas and Justin Foster are also listed as starters.
Justin Mascoll and KJ Henry as listed as third-string at opposite defensive end spots.
At defensive tackle, Nyles Pinckney is listed as a starter while Jordan Williams and freshman Tyler Davis are listed as co-starters.
The linebacker starters are as expected, with Isaiah Simmons (SLB), James Skalski (MLB) and Chad Smith (WLB). Mike Jones Jr. is the backup for Simmons, Jake Venables and Kane Patterson are listed behind Skalski and Baylon Spector and Keith Maguire are listed behind Smith.
Freshman Sheridan Jones is listed as the second-string cornerback behind Derion Kendrick while Mario Goodrich is second-string behind AJ Terrell. Freshman Andrew Booth is third-string behind Goodrich.
Overall:
Interestingly enough, Derion Kendrick and freshman Joseph Ngata are listed as the two kickoff returners with Kendrick also handling punt return duties.
This is a very talented depth chart and it’s clear that the Clemson football coaching staff feels good about its team heading into the season.
