Several Clemson football players were given high ‘Player Impact Ratings’ as part of ESPN’s new video game-style ratings.

ESPN unveiled a new player ratings system similar to video game style ratings for the previous 2018 season and heading into the 2019 season.

Several Clemson football players were mentioned in the ratings system, which is built on a mathematical model by ESPN Sports Analytics. The model rates a team’s performance while a player is on the field vs. the team’s performance when he is not on the field to come up with a numerical rating for the player.

The Playstation Player Impact Ratings give fans a chance to see where their favorite players match up with athletes around the rest of the country. Though they aren’t 100 percent accurate, it’s still a fun tool to look at when comparing players.

Here’s a look at how some of the notable Clemson football players graded out in the system, which will be fully released at the beginning of the 2019 season:

  • Gage Cervenka (99)
  • Christian Wilkins (99)
  • Clelin Ferrell (97)
  • Trevor Lawrence (95)
  • Dexter Lawrence (94)

The NCAA Football-style ratings will be released fully at the beginning of the 2019 season, but these were the Clemson football players who currently were listed in the introduction of the ratings.

Gage Cervenka graded out high and that shouldn’t be a surprise. The talented offensive guard was a key contributor on last year’s team, especially in the run game.

Trevor Lawrence, according to the ratings, was actually the No. 4 quarterback in the nation behind Kyler Murray (99), Tua Tagovailoa (99) and Zac Thomas (95) of App State. This is an example of how the ratings can be flawed a bit and don’t necessarily represent talent or skill. However, it’s still a fun measurement.

All three Clemson football players who were taken in the first round received high ratings- Wilkins (99), Ferrell (97) and Lawrence (94)- as well.

It will be interesting to see what the ratings system looks like when it is officially released and how things will shape up over the course of the season.
