Clemson football DB Derion Kendrick has been sidelined with a lingering injury, but his health will be the key for the Tigers’ secondary in 2019.

Derion Kendrick impressed the Clemson football coaches immensely this past spring when he moved from wide receiver over to cornerback and caught on naturally.

Kendrick was listed as the starter on Clemson football post-spring depth chart at cornerback and came into fall camp looking to put the finishing touches on earning a starting spot. Unfortunately for Kendrick and the entire Clemson football program, he has been dealing with a lingering injury.

In addition to being banged up, Kendrick suffered a tragic loss last week when a former high school teammate was killed in a car accident, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and all involved. All of this has understandably kept him from being able to compete at 100 percent during the Tigers’ fall camp.

With all of that being said, Kendrick is seemingly doing well now and is getting back to normal. He’ll have to overcome some physical and mental hurdles to begin the season, but it’s clear the talented athlete is up to the challenge.

At this point, there has been no indications that anyone other than Kendrick will be the starter at the cornerback spot opposite-side AJ Terrell when the Tigers take the field against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

It’s clear, at least from our perspective, that the sophomore has proven his ability and has the trust of the coaching staff to lead the Tigers at that position. Kendrick and Terrell at cornerback will be an absolutely impressive duo for the defensive backfield.

Next. Lawrence, Etienne combine for lethal backfield. dark

Once you mix in talented players like Andrew Booth, Mario Goodrich and Sheridan Jones to the bunch, you’ve got a deep and highly-skilled cornerback room.

It all lies on Kendrick remaining healthy.
