As we head into the thick of summer time, Rubbing the Rock will be taking a look at what to expect from each position for the Clemson football program.

Each Clemson football positional unit has certain things that they are tasked with working on in the summer.

In all reality, individual players are tasked with things they need to work on and areas in which the coaching staff wants to see them improve. Throughout the remainder of the month, Rubbing the Rock will be taking a look at what Clemson football fans can expect each position to be working on throughout the summer.

Today, we begin the series with a look at the quarterbacks.

Summer Expectations: Quarterback

Trevor Lawrence’s summer is packed to the brim. He was at the Manning Academy Quarterback Camp earlier this month and he’ll be getting tons of media requests to be on the cover of magazines and the subject of feature articles.

On the field, though, I think there are two areas the coaching staff wants to see him improve: 1. Keeping plays alive; 2. Working on deep ball touch.

Lawrence was solid all season and really improved as we neared the postseason. Still, I think the coaching staff wants him to work on that deep ball touch. When you have a high-powered arm like Lawrence, you have to continue to work on accuracy and that fade route. It’s all about timing. In addition, Dabo Swinney has been vocal that he wants Lawrence to work on keeping plays alive.

The coaching staff wants to see him get out of the pocket and continue to look downfield because when you do that, good things happen.

Behind Lawrence is Chase Brice. Brice will continue to work on arm strength and accuracy and looking for opportunities to get on the field.

Freshman Taisun Phommachanh and Redshirt Freshman Ben Batson round out the depth chart. The Tigers will look for Phommachanh, especially, to continue working on his passing game because he already has the tools in the running game to be a lethal threat.
