Clemson football linebacker Greg Williams is a vastly underrated option for the Tigers in terms of potential, skill and ability to make an impact.

Throughout the rest of the month, Rubbing the Rock will be giving you a breakdown of each 2019 Clemson football freshman.

The 2019 Clemson football freshman class features 29 total signees, 17 of which were early enrollees.

The single biggest position recruited during the 2019 cycle was at linebacker, where the Tigers brought in a total of five signees.

Let’s continue our series with a look at one of those signees: Linebacker Greg Williams.

Talent Analysis:

Williams was a composite 3-star linebacker, but he shows potential and ability to develop into much more than what his star-rating has to say.

At 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds, Williams is a big linebacker prospect and has already shown the needed strength and power to play the position at the collegiate level. Though his size is good, Williams also shows quick bursts and ability to accelerate.

When you think about Williams, think about the potential to develop into a Tre Lamar-type linebacker, but with better reach and size. Once he gets into the program, the coaches could transition him over to defensive line if needed, as well.

Immediate Impact?

The Clemson football coaching staff didn’t recruit Williams to come in and compete for starter-level playing time as a freshman. They saw the measurables and elite power and wanted to get him on campus because of what he could potentially develop into.

Williams will have an opportunity to compete for playing time, though, because of the lack of depth at linebacker. He could see a role on special teams as a freshman, but for now I still expect that he’ll redshirt.

dark. Next. Clemson's returning skill is insane

After a year of being mentored and developed at the position in the program, he could show promise of becoming an elite linebacker at the collegiate level.
