Clemson football freshman RB Chez Mellusi is exactly the kind of play-maker Tiger fans want to see. He will have a chance to compete for playing time immediately.

Chez Mellusi was very much an underrated running back coming out of high school.

Though he didn’t get near the prestige or exposure that many of the other running backs got in the 2019 class, he still will prove to be a talented player.

Mellusi, a 4-star running back, wasn’t the first option for Clemson football, but he is somewhat reminiscent of Travis Etienne. Though he didn’t garner a lot of attention, he is almost like a diamond in the ruff.

As we continue our series taking a look at the 2019 Clemson football freshmen, here’s our breakdown of running back Chez Mellusi.

Talent Analysis:

One of the major reasons that Mellusi didn’t quite get the exposure that some of the other running backs around the nation got is because of the system he played in high school. Mellusi played in kind of a hybrid system that featured a lot of option with some spread concepts.

With that kind of triple-option experience, many schools didn’t pay much attention to the numbers he was putting up.

However, when you look at the film, you can see the type of player that Mellusi is capable of developing into. He’s got a nice burst and runs with great balance. In many ways, he sort of looks like Lyn-J Dixon when he runs the ball.

In the system he plays in, Mellusi doesn’t necessarily have to find the open hole to run through all of the time- as it is already determined in many cases- but he is able to burst through the running lane and get out in space.

Immediate Impact?

It will take him a little while to adjust to the Clemson offense and the formations that he will be tasked with running, but the biggest thing that will determine Mellusi’s playing time as a freshman is his ability to pass-protect.

He will be relied upon to fill in the depth chart in some role this season with the departure of Tavien Feaster, but how much of a role he will play this year will be determined by what he’s able to accomplish and how much he can prove to the coaches in fall camp.
