Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell is considered a secondary candidate for the vacant Michigan job, according to several reports.

Clemson Maven’s Zach Lentz reported that Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell was being considered a secondary candidate for the vacant head coaching job at Michigan.

John Beilein, who had been the Wolverines’ coach for the past 12 seasons, announced Monday that he had reached a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Beilein noted his disappointment in the scandals going on in College Basketball as one reason for his decision to head to the NBA.

With him gone, the Wolverines must find a coach who can make them a contender. Michigan has consistently been in the NCAA Tournament under Beilein and the Wolverines have made two Final Fours in his 12 seasons as the head coach.

What does it mean for Clemson?

Michigan has a list of candidates that it will pursue ahead of Brad Brownell. This is a storied program that has had success in the past. I’m sure they are looking for someone that can lead the program to prominence, but also keep it clean- something they didn’t do in the past.

Brownell is on their list, but most likely down their list.

He may emerge as a potential candidate if plenty of other coaches around the nation turn the job down, but for now, I wouldn’t consider this to mean much for Clemson basketball.

Dan Radakovich has given his vote of confidence to Brownell and what he is doing with the program. Brownell just recently signed a new contract and I don’t think Michigan is all that interested in paying a buyout for a guy that would be questionable at best as far as fit is concerned.

Unless something drastically changes, I don’t think we’ll even see Brownell get an interview for the job, much less be offered.

The Tigers have their coach intact for the next season- most likely the next few seasons- and that’s not likely to change.
