The Clemson football specialists have struggled with consistency this spring. That is a concern heading into the summer that must be addressed.

The specialists for Clemson football have been inconsistent throughout the spring, according to the coaching staff.

That could, in fact, be a concern as we head into the thick of the summer and begin to set our eyes on fall camp.

Outside of the Clemson football program, no one has been able to see too much of the specialists. During media sessions, all eyes are on the skill position players and the trenches.

As a matter of fact, the most we got to see of the specialists was during the annual spring game a couple of weeks ago.

The takeaways that I had following that game were as follows:

  • Steve Sawicki and BT Potter made field goals, which is good.
  • BT Potter still has a cannon for a leg
  • Both punters looked inconsistent

Despite the fact that the coaches have said that Will Spiers has looked better in spring camp, I didn’t see it in the spring game.

Now, that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Spiers may be the leader in practice, but in the scrimmage both he and freshman Aidan Swanson had good moments and moments of disappointment.

Swanson, who truly does have a strong leg, booted a punt inside the five-yard line at one point in the scrimmage, but also had one that only traveled 30 yards.

Spiers had a nice punt in the middle of the game, but had a couple of early kicks that just didn’t travel all that far.

Swinney has continuously said that he is looking for consistency in the place-kicking game. BT Potter hit a field goal and Steve Sawicki hit two, but neither looked as if they were a confident, game-ready kicker.

Potter will most likely be relied upon to fill that role, so it’s going to be important for him to work on accuracy and confidence during the summer to become the best kicker that he can possibly be.

This 2019 Clemson football team has a chance to repeat as National Champions, but they will need some consistency from the specialists.
