Clemson Football: Clelin Ferrell is an underrated edge-rusher
Former Clemson football DE Clelin Ferrell isn’t getting near the hype that he deserves, and that’s going to make an NFL organization very happy.
As we close in on the NFL Draft, it’s clear that there are several former Clemson football players that are going to make an impact at the next level.
Clelin Ferrell is one of those prospects, but unfortunately he isn’t getting near the hype that he deserves.
Ferrell is projected as a first-round draft pick by every single NFL Mock Draft out there. Even with that being said, the highest that I’ve seen him go in any mock is around No. 12 or No. 13.
Most mock drafts have him going anywhere between that 12-21 range.
In my opinion, that’s way too low for what Ferrell brings to the table. There are some talented edge rushers in this class, including Rashan Gary, Nick Bosa, Josh Allen, Montez Sweat and Brian Burns. Though I respect the talent that each of those guys represent- and others- I just don’t see what all these analysts are seeing that make them locks over Ferrell.
Gary gives up on plays too often. Though very talented, Bosa has been injured. Montez Sweat and Brian Burns are both very talented, but I’m not sure that what they’ve done is any more impressive than what Ferrell has done.
There are many analysts that are wary of selecting Ferrell because of what many recent Clemson football defensive ends have done- see Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd for examples. Though, I’d combat that argument by bringing up Vic Beasley.
Anyway, I’m not here to make an argument for Ferrell over some of the other guys in the draft.
I’m just here to tell you that if an organization is able to get Clelin Ferrell with the No. 15, 16 or 17 pick in the NFL Draft, they’ve gotten a steal. He is a top-10 caliber player and his film speaks for itself. Ferrell’s technique is great and he has a motor that never stops.
