Most teams don’t have as many 4-star recruits as Clemson football has starting QBs

Clemson football has done such a good job recruiting, they’ll have more quarterback recruits starting next year than most teams have 4-star recruits.

College Football’s 2019 recruiting class is signed.

Many of those recruits are already enrolled on campus. Spring games plod along and the only one that mattered is in the rear view, we’re starting to get a clear view of how the starting quarterback situations will look in 2019 around the nation.

There will be more starting quarterbacks that have suited up in orange than group of five teams have 4 star recruits… combined.

To be clear, Clemson football is a recruiting powerhouse. And you definitely need to cascade players at key positions. Teams are lucky to have stud players for 4 years.

(Shouts to Christian Wilkins and the rest of the Power Rangers. I love them so much.)

(But if Trevor Lawrence says he’s staying for his 4th year, I’ll personally grab him by that gorgeous head of hair and drag him to the NFL Draft.)  (Probably not.)

(But maybe.)

When you recruit a quarterback, you’re bringing him in to be the man. That’s how it has to be. As former stud-Tiger-turned-stud-Tiger, Kelly Bryant said:

"“You look at any other position. You can rotate,” Bryant said. “The quarterback is pretty much that one guy. As a competitor, guys want to play. Sometimes there has to be balance, though, with patience.”"

Clemson has done an incredible job bringing in quarterbacks in the past 10 years. Prior to Tajh Boyd, who was the best quarterback at Clemson football in the last 30 years? Woody Dantzler? Clipboard Jesus?

It has been an embarrassment of riches at the most important position on the field. Looking only at the starters Tajh [ignoring Stoudt, bless his heart] to Deshaun to KB to TL doesn’t paint the full picture.

Let’s count current and former Clemson football quarterbacks entering next year as a presumptive starter for a D1 school.

First, Trevor Lawrence. Duh. First, Trevor Lawrence. Duh.

Last year, Zerrick Cooper, who you might remember as coming on in relief after Syracuse bounced Kelly Bryant’s head off the turf, lit it up for Jacksonville State last year. He led the Gamecocks to an Ohio Valley Conference championship, advancing to the second round of the FCS playoffs.

He and the only Gamecocks worth rooting for will make noise again next year in his red shirt junior year. He will continue to develop and hopefully get some looks in the NFL.

Next comes Hunter Johnson. To say that Northwestern stole one here is an understatement. The kid can ball. He joins a Wildcats squad that won the BIG 10 West with someone named Clayton Thorson. Thorson is graduated, and Hunter is about to run the BIG 10 West.

It’s a division starved for quarterback talent, and Hunter Johnson is going to go off.

Finally, Kelly Bryant. Probably the most handsome player in recent Clemson history. And man the dude was exciting.

He balled for Clemson, and I have no doubt that he will progress as a player with Mizzou. He’s going to be so much fun to watch.

I am rooting so hard for all 4 of these dudes.

dark. Next. 5 Post-Spring Takeaways

So let’s tally up the starting D1 quarterbacks who play for or used to play for Clemson. TL + KB + Zerrick + Hunter. That’s four.

Let’s check on the Group of 5 2019 recruiting classes. Only one squad is bringing in any 4-star recruits, and that’s Boise State with three.

4 > 3.
Clemson is filthy at recruiting.
