Clemson football backup quarterback Chase Brice is more than just a serviceable player, he is a talented play-maker with NFL-caliber capabilities.

Chase Brice is more than just a serviceable backup.

Brice, the redshirt sophomore for Clemson football, is a talented quarterback that could mold into an NFL-caliber player before it’s all said and done.

Don’t believe me, ask Dabo Swinney.

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney knows a little something about talent. After all, he has won two National Titles and five ACC Championships. His career winning percentage is .795 and, last season, he coached the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 season, as they became the first team to accomplish that feat in the modern era.

As we reviewed the film from the spring game Saturday afternoon, one thing that Dabo Swinney made sure to tell the analysts from ESPN was that Chase Brice was more than just a good player, he was going to play in the NFL one day.

And I, for one, believe him.

When you look at Chase Brice, you see the potential. He has an accurate arm and though the power isn’t on a Trevor Lawrence level, it’s still there.

He has deceptive quickness and runs that read-option with much skill. All of that, combined with a high football IQ and high confidence, has turned Brice into a very good player. By the way, he still has three years of eligibility remaining.

Over the course of these next few years, I expect to see Brice continue to develop. He’s got some real arm talent and could certainly be a QB at the next level.

Many believe that Brice will transfer- and that may be the case. If the Tigers come away with another 5-star QB to take over after Trevor Lawrence, he may choose to play his final year or two of eligibility somewhere else. Perhaps Brice will choose to graduate from Clemson and then play a final year as a grad-transfer somewhere else.

Maybe he will choose to stay at Clemson for his entire career. No matter what he chooses in the future, two things will always be true about Chase Brice:

  1. He is a team player and without him, the Tigers don’t beat Syracuse.
  2. He’s going to get a shot in the NFL.

Without Chase Brice, there’s a real possibility that Clemson football isn’t even in the CFB Playoff in 2018. He is an important part of the team and will earn playing time, no doubt in my mind.

And, even if Brice never starts a game at Clemson, he will get a shot with an NFL team. The power of the paw and the talent that he possesses will be too much. As a matter of fact, there’s a solid chance Brice could be drafted even if he serves as the back-up for the next three years.
