Clemson football position coaches Todd Bates and Robbie Caldwell are currently ranked as two of the top recruiters in the nation.

Each year, 247 Sports ranks the top recruiters in the nation through an algorithm that includes star-ratings, number of prospects and averages.

At the end of the recruiting cycle, the coach that has the highest average is named the National Recruiter of the  Year by the website.

In 2019, Mike Locksley, offensive coordinator of Maryland, won the award with 84.26 points and a 95.11 average. In 2018 Dell McGee, running backs coach at Georgia, was named the winner of the award (85.98 points, 95.02 average) and, in 2017, it was Chris Partridge, linebackers coach at Michigan (83.12 points, 92.83 average).

The current race for the 2020 cycle is already underway and two Clemson football positional coaches lead the way.

According to the latest updated recruiting rankings, Todd Bates (DL Coach) is ranked No. 1 in the nation with four commits, 68.28 points and a 95.20 overall average.

Right behind him is Offensive Line Coach Robbie Caldwell, who has four commits, which has culminated in a 66.26 points and a 92.58 average.

After those two Tiger coaches are guys like Dennis Johnson (DL coach at LSU), Larry Scott (TE coach at Florida), Herb Hand (OL coach at Texas) and Ephraim Banda (Safeties coach at Miami).

While winning the award doesn’t really mean much in the grand scheme of things, I do think it is indicative of what we’ve come to expect with Clemson football.

The Tigers are getting the top prospects in the country, and they are doing it an unprecedented level. It’s crazy to see Clemson football leading the way with both the DL and OL. That means the Tigers are getting prospects that are going to continue to make them strong in the trenches, which wins football games.

Both Bates and Caldwell have done a great job so far with this 2020 recruiting class and it will be interesting, particularly with Bates along that defensive line, to see what else happens over the next few months with some of the recruits they are zeroed-in on.
