2019 Clemson football recruiting signee Jaelyn Lay, a 4-star tight end out of Riverdale, Georgia, is a huge pickup for the Tigers.

The 2019 Clemson football recruiting class is a consensus top-five class in the nation.

One of the top prospects in the class that doesn’t get talked about near enough is 4-star tight end Jaelyn Lay.

Lay- a 6-foot-6, 220 pound tight end out of Riverdale, Georgia- is about as important of a commitment for the Tigers in the 2019 cycle as anybody.

Dabo Swinney talked glowingly about his signing and it’s clear that the coaching staff think he’s going to be able to come in and make an impact early in his career.

Analysis:

Lay is currently 220, but I think his frame can probably hold up to 240.

When I watch his film, I see two things.

  1. A guy that has the ability to be a talented receiver
  2. A guy that isn’t afraid to block

That’s the true definition of a tight end.

Lay isn’t just one of those tight ends that you see in today’s game that is just looking to be a tall receiver. He isn’t afraid to get in the trenches and block. He’s able to be a solid lead-blocker in passing situations and open up holes in run-blocking, as well.

That’s why I think the coaching staff is so high on him.

Lay is a guy that- if Garrett Williams leaves this year- could come in and compete for a starting job at the tight end spot right away. He’ll be competing with Braden Galloway for playing time, but I don’t see anyway that you don’t see Lay get on the field.

He’s going to be a valuable part of that Clemson football offense going forward and I’m interested to see what he’s able to do as soon as he gets on campus.
