The way that the Clemson football coaching staff recruits is just different when compared to the rest of the nation and other programs.

How many times have you heard this? Clemson football is just different.

As we head into the thick of December, recruiting posts start to pick up. Clemson football fans begin to take a deeper look at the prospects that the Tigers are looking at. They begin to think about who will be coming into the program next year.

Every year, though, it seems that the Tiger faithful need a little reminder.

I always seem to get messages and comments asking why Clemson isn’t ranked inside the top two or three in the nation in class rankings. People always ask why the coaching staff isn’t going after “this talented 5-star” and so on.

Really, the answer always comes back this fine point: Clemson football recruits differently than the rest of the nation.

It’s just different…

The coaching staff recruits to their needs, not their wants.

They don’t go and sign a big class of 30-35 every single year just to take the most talented guys. Instead, they search out the region and the country and find guys that will be the best fit for the program.

There have been a lot of instances where Clemson has stopped recruiting a talented guy heavily because he just isn’t a good fit for the program, whether that be academics, attitude, character or something else they see in him.

It’s also clear that the coaches don’t care about star ratings. The staff could care less if a guy is a 3-star, 4-star or 5-star. They see the target’s potential and work off of that. Clemson has some of the best talent analyzers in the country and it shows up each and every year.

Clemson is going to recruit to its needs. The staff is going to sign guys with high character that they feel can help build the program. That’s different compared to many other programs that just choose to sign as many guys as they can and then drop the scholarship offer at the last minute.

Sometimes, the coaches miss out on a top target. Sometimes a recruit decides to go elsewhere, but for the most part, Clemson football always finds a way to get the guys it has placed high value on.

Why? Because Clemson is just different.
