The Clemson football team began bowl practice Wednesday afternoon. Here are some observations from the first day of Cotton Bowl prep.

Clemson football began preparation for the upcoming Cotton Bowl Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers will be taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for a chance to advance to the National Championship for a third time in four years.

As the Tigers began workouts and practice for the College Football Playoff, there were several notes and observations to come out of the day.

Cotton Bowl Prep: Practice No. 1…

  • The redshirt freshmen looked good

From all accounts, the Clemson football media members have said that the redshirt freshmen looked much improved from where they were at in the fall when camp first began. Jordan McFadden stood in at left tackle and performed really well against Clelin Ferrell.

It also seemed that there were several other young guys that performed well, like Justin Mascoll. Even though the Tigers will be preparing for the Cotton Bowl extensively, you’ll see them take time to practice with next year’s squad as well.

  • Cornell Powell wasn’t at practice, Mitch Hyatt was in a yellow jersey

It was reported that Mitch Hyatt, Clemson’s starting offensive tackle, was in a yellow non-contact jersey. Dabo Swinney said that was just a way of giving him the day off.

Cornell Powell, the wide receiver that was supposed to redshirt, wasn’t at practice. Of course, exams are going on and that could be the reason. It was rumored that Powell could be transferring out of the program following this season, though, so that may be a progression worth watching.

  • It’s that time of the year again

More than anything, it’s just exciting to see Clemson football getting back on the field. This is what every team works for- a chance at a National Championship.

The Tigers are one of just four teams that have a chance for the biggest trophy of them all and that’s special. Tiger fans need to not let this become routine and think that “it’s just that time of the year again,” but instead really enjoy the moment and realize just how special this program has been over the past few years and how special it has a chance of becoming.
