Three Clemson football players were named to the first-team of the AP All-American Team, which was released Monday afternoon.

Three Clemson football players were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press Monday afternoon.

Tiger offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt, defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and defensive end Clelin Ferrell were all named to the first-team of the AP’s All-American team.

The Tigers’ three selections was good enough for second-best in the nation in total picks, right behind Alabama which had four.

Clemson’s Travis Etienne was also named the second-team for All-Americans.

Thoughts:

That’s about what I was thinking. I’m a little surprised not to see Dexter Lawrence on one of the three teams. I know his stats may not be eye-popping, but if you watched the games, you see the dominance that he plays with.

I think the AP wanted to stay away from taking another defensive lineman from Clemson football with the fear of being accused of bias.

It’s interesting that the AP decided to leave Travis Etienne off the first-team as well. They elected to put Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor and Memphis’s Darrell Henderson over Etienne, which I think is probably a travesty.

If you watched the three guys play, it’s clear that Etienne is the best runner of the three. It’s just the fact that both Taylor and Henderson got more carries than Etienne. A lot of the voters in the AP, honestly I’d say the vast majority, don’t look at much more than stats.

They take who they think are the two best rushers who gained the most yardage. They don’t necessarily look at yards per carry or how the players look or even what defenses they faced when submitting their ballots.
