NC State coach Dave Doeren believes the Wolfpack can get to Clemson football quarterback Trevor Lawrence by bringing pressure and making him uncomfortable.

Clemson football freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence is looking to make an impact for the Tigers against NC State.

While Lawrence may be able to take advantage of the Wolfpack through the secondary, NC State coach Dave Doeren wants to make the young freshman uncomfortable.

On Wednesday, Doeren told the media that NC State wants to rattle the freshman by bringing pressure.

Thoughts:

I’m sure Doeren meant no harm by his comments, but they’re certainly concerning and a bit frustrating if you’re a Clemson football fan.

I’ve watched how NC State has played Clemson the past two years. They’ve come out and tried to blast every single ball-carrier as hard as they could.

My mind goes back to Wayne Gallman back in 2016 when he was knocked out of the game on a play that was clearly targeting. Doeren praised the hit following the game and I think we could be in for some of the same Saturday.

I’m not saying that NC State is coming out looking to intentionally hurt Lawrence.

But, I am saying that they’re not going to let up if they get the chance. If a defensive end breaks through the line of scrimmage, he’s going to hit Trevor Lawrence as hard as he possibly can even if Lawrence gets rid of the ball on time.

This comment from Doeren should fire up the Clemson football offensive line. That unit should take pride in protecting their quarterback. Anytime an opposing coach says something about wanting your quarterback to be “on his back more than he wants to be,” you should come into the game with added focus.

It’s time for the Tigers to play with that chip on their shoulder and out-physical the Pack.

As far as the comments are concerned, I’m sure Doeren wouldn’t take too kindly to Dabo Swinney saying that he wanted to put Ryan Finley on his back more than he wants to be.
