Clemson football freshmen Trevor Lawrence and Justyn Ross will be cornerstone parts of the Tiger offense for years to come.

Clemson football fans have already become familiar with the popular connection: Trevor Lawrence finds Justyn Ross for a long touchdown.

After all, of the 11 touchdown passes thrown by Trevor Lawrence this season, four of them have been to Justyn Ross.

Ross is currently averaging 20.4 yards per catch and is second on the team in receiving yardage (286), right behind Tee Higgins (307).

Looking ahead to the future of the Clemson football program, it’s clear to me that this duo is going to be historically great.

When you look at great Tiger quarterback-receiver duos in the past, many of them just don’t compare to the ceiling of Lawrence-Ross.

We’ve had some great ones, particularly recently. Tajh Boyd with Sammy Watkins and/or DeAndre ‘Nuk’ Hopkins. Deshaun Watson and Mike Williams or Artavis Scott. Before them, you had pretty solid duos with Charlie Whitehurst and Chansi Stuckey or Cullen Harper and Aaron Kelly. Before that, you even had Steve Fuller with Dwight Clark and/or Jerry Butler.

The point is this: There have been a ton of great QB-WR duos for Clemson football in the program’s history.

But, there’s just something different about Lawrence and Ross as freshmen.

Reaching Potential…

There’s potential, especially with the two playing together for two more seasons after this one, for this combo to be historically great.

We’ve already seen glimpses of what Lawrence and Ross can be and they’re only going to get better as they progress. We seem to forget sometimes that both of these guys are just freshmen. Lawrence has only been on campus since January and Ross has only been in the program since the summer.

Can you imagine what an entire offseason of work together is going to mean for the two?

The two complement each other very well. Ross is a big-play threat and Lawrence loves to throw the deep ball. We’re going to see plenty more connections between these two this season and beyond. Before it’s over, I believe we could see Ross finish as Clemson’s leading receiving touchdown leader and Lawrence as the Tigers’ leading in many passing categories.
