Clemson football survived a game in which everything seemed to go wrong against Syracuse. Now, the Tigers will move forward and prepare for Wake Forest.

The Clemson football team survived an injury to starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and defeated Syracuse 27-23 in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon.

Now, the Tigers will refocus and get ready to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons this coming Saturday in a game that will be televised at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Interestingly enough, there were several changes to the depth chart for Clemson football heading into this one.

Depth Chart Changes…

  • Xavier Thomas is sole second-string

Perhaps the most interesting change to the depth chart is seeing the ‘ors’ being taken away from Xavier Thomas at the defensive end position.

According to the new depth chart, Thomas is now the sole second-string defensive end behind Austin Bryant and for good reason. If you watched the game Saturday, you saw his emphatic exclamation mark put on the game when he absolutely just destroyed Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey.

But, if you watch the game a little more closely, you’ll see that he was very close to a couple more sacks, as well. He was drawing double-teams and will, without a doubt, see more playing time going forward.

  • Only two QBs listed on depth chart

Ben Batson was listed on the Syracuse depth chart, but now it’s down to just two quarterbacks: Trevor Lawrence as the starter and Chase Brice as the backup.

It’s clear that the Tigers are confident that either one of those guys can win games for them going forward and it will be interesting to see if Trevor Lawrence can get back for the Wake Forest game.

  • New H-Back position

Garrett Williams is now listed as the starter at a new “H-Back” position and Milan Richard is listed as the lone starter at tight end.

I think we’re going to see Williams used more and more as a lead blocker going forward and that’s what the depth chart is saying as well.

Next. Will Trevor Lawrence return for Wake Forest game?. dark

  • Tavien Feaster, Adam Choice Co-Backups

Tavien Feaster and Adam Choice are listed as co-backups at running back. This change actually happened last week, but we never really got around to talking about it because of all the quarterback news going on.

I will say that I think all three running backs played well against Syracuse and am interested to see that rotation going forward. Obviously, we’re going to see Etienne get the most carries, but it will be fun to see how Choice and Feaster are rotated into the games going forward.
