Clemson football fans voted in a poll ran by Rubbing the Rock and nearly half of fans said that freshman QB Trevor Lawrence should be the starter.

Rubbing the Rock recently ran a poll on Twitter asking Clemson football fans what their current thoughts were on the quarterback competition.

The poll finished up with nearly 400 votes and the results were pretty clear what Tiger nation thought about the quarterbacks.

While the poll was only a small sample size of Clemson football fans, I’ve found that even small surveys can help shed some light on the pulse of what a fanbase is thinking.

Here was the results of the poll, via Twitter:

32 percent of Tiger nation said that Clemson should keep to the two-QB system, while 21 percent said that the Tigers should rely on returning starter and senior leader Kelly Bryant to run the offense.

44 percent of the poll voters, though, said that Trevor Lawrence, a freshman who has played just three games, should be the starter and relied upon to take the majority of snaps at the quarterback position for the rest of the season.

Poll Analysis:

Honestly, I think there are two waves of thinking out there when it comes to Clemson football fans and the quarterback position:

  • Kelly Bryant led us to the CFB Playoff and he can get us back. We should rely on him because he is more experience and better than people are giving him credit for. We wouldn’t have even won the Texas A&M game without Bryant and his athleticism is huge in running this offense. Lawrence is just a freshman and he’s going to be a great talent, but right now is Kelly Bryant’s time to shine.

There’s also another line of thinking.

  • Kelly Bryant is a great athlete and he can win every single game on the schedule for the Tigers. He just can’t beat Alabama. The Tigers need Trevor Lawrence and his throwing ability to be able to beat the Crimson Tide. Lawrence is a once-in-a-lifetime talent and is clearly the better thrower of the football. If you gave him all the snaps, the offense would open up and there would be more threats with a more balanced attack.

I’m not here to say either side is right or wrong. There’s also a contingent of fans that believe the two-QB system is working and maybe it will as the season progresses.

If you ask my personal opinion, I believe that the coaches are going to continue to play both guys as they have. If a guy separates himself from the other, that guy will get more playing time. But, that very well may be a game-to-game decision.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what any of us think. It’s just a talking point. The Clemson football coaching staff is going to do what they think is best for the team and what gives them the best chance to win. I trust this staff to do what’s best and they’ve done a phenomenal job so far. I don’t have any reason to believe that they won’t continue to do so.
