With the threat of a hurricane later this week, Clemson football’s home match up with Georgia Southern could be affected as a result.

The Clemson football team plans to play the Georgia Southern Eagles this weekend after a hard fought win against Texas A&M on the road this past Saturday.

Those plans, however, could be affected by the impending track on Hurricane Florence, which is currently slated to hit the shores of the Carolinas or Virginia later this week.

With the danger of a what could be the biggest hurricane to hit the Carolinas in years, S.C. Governor Henry McMaster declared a state-of-emergency and ordered an evacuation of the entire strand area of South Carolina.

Schools around the strands and even further inland have already been canceled until further notice as they prepare for what could be a Category 3 or Category 4 Hurricane to hit Thursday afternoon and into Friday morning. Major flooding and wind damage is expected to occur, according to the National Weather Service.

Will there be football?

Obviously, we all want to be in prayer for those affected by the Hurricane. Hurricanes are nothing to play with and we encourage everyone to evacuate and have an emergency plan in hand. Don’t wait for it to be here before you’re prepared, go ahead and get prepared now.

One of the biggest questions from our perspective for this weekend is if the Clemson football game will happen.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Clemson officials are monitoring the track of the storm very closely, according to Tigernet.
  • Georgia Southern plans to make the drive up to Clemson on Friday and doesn’t intend to alter its plans, via The Greenville News.

We will continue to update this post as we get more information. There are more concerns than just the path of the Hurricane. There’s traveling hazards and questions about if people will be able to get back home.

Most likely, I’d expect that we have a decision rendered before Georgia Southern makes that trip Friday. I would imagine that officials from both schools will meet and make a decision Thursday, but that is speculation.

If the game is played, we definitely could see a drop in attendance and the game on the field itself be affected. Only time will tell, but stay here on Rubbing the Rock for more updates and analysis.
