Clemson Football Recruiting: Former 4-star Ohio State Commit flips to Tigers
The 2019 Clemson football recruiting class picked up a commitment from a former 4-star Ohio State commitment Monday afternoon.
The 2019 Clemson football recruiting class picked up yet another commitment Monday afternoon, this time in the form of a “flip.”
Kane Patterson, a 4-star linebacker from the state of Tennessee, was previously an Ohio State commitment.
One week ago, though, Patterson announced a decommitment from the Buckeyes football program after all the controversy and turmoil surrounding Urban Meyer and the situation that has followed him, particularly for the last month.
Patterson visited Clemson Saturday afternoon for the Furman game and announced his decision via Twitter Monday afternoon.
Analysis:
Patterson’s commitment gave Clemson 24 overall commitments in the 2019 class and moved the Tigers to No. 5 in the 247 Sports Composite Rankings.
He is the fifth linebacker commit in this class, joining Greg Williams (3-star), Bryton Constantin (4-star), Vonta Bentley (4-star) and Keith Maguire (3-star).
When I watch Patterson’s film, I like what I see. He has the ability to read offenses and get in position to make a play. He is a physical player and a violent tackler. He reminds me a bit of Jamie Skalski coming out of high school.
It will take him a couple of years to develop, like most linebackers, but I think Patterson can come in and be a viable option for the Tigers at linebacker. This is a solid pick up for Clemson recruiting, which was in need of at least one more linebacker.
As a sophomore, Patterson said Clemson was his favorite, but the Tigers did not offer him until just recently.
I think you’ll see a trend of this coming in the near future. Other schools will begin heavily recruiting and offering Ohio State commits. That program still has a negative connotation around it and that may lead to a few more flips away from the Buckeyes before it’s all said and done.
