One of the least talked about position battles for Clemson football in 2018 is the cornerback position. Who will be the starters for the Tigers?

The 2018 Clemson football team is one of the best, talent-wise, in school history.

The Tigers are the favorites to win the ACC Championship and one of the favorites to make the College Football Playoff and compete for a National Championship.

The top two storylines coming into the season for Clemson is the dominant and deep defensive line and the battle between senior Kelly Bryant and freshman Trevor Lawrence at quarterback.

While those may be two interesting storylines, one of the least talked about position battles has to do with the cornerbacks.

Who starts at Cornerback?

It’s pretty clear that Trayvon Mullen will be one starter at cornerback. Mullen is expected to take huge steps forward and become a very solid defensive back for the Tigers.

In my opinion, I think he could be the next Mackensie Alexander for Clemson. Mullen is backed up by LeAnthony Williams and Brian Dawkins Jr., according to the preseason depth chart.

But, there is a position battle going on on the other side of the defensive backfield.

Mark Fields, a senior, and A.J. Terrell, a sophomore, are locked in a competition for the right to be named the “starter.” Both of those guys will see plenty of snaps and the depth chart probably won’t have much to do with their rotation when we get into the regular season.

However, when I look at the two, I think that we will see Terrell take hold on that starting spot. Terrell is extremely talented and has a chance to be a lockdown corner for the Tigers. There’s a chance that we see the two named as co-starters.

It will be interesting to see how the position battle goes as we head into the final chapter of fall camp and get ready for the Tigers’ first match up of the season against the Furman Paladins.
