Clemson football has plenty of depth at running back for the 2018 season, but freshman Lyn-J Dixon has been special during preseason camp.

The 2018 Clemson football season is less than two and a half weeks away from kickoff.

When looking at the running back position, it’s clear that the Tigers have plenty of talent. Travis Etienne, who is listed as the starter, is one of the most explosive running backs in the nation.

Etienne was one of the most efficient and explosive runners of the football last season as a freshman and is expected to take big steps forward this year.

Also sharing snaps with Etienne are veterans Tavien Feaster and Adam Choice.

It’s clear that all three of the veterans have talent to earn playing time in 2018. Even with that talent, though, there is a freshman that is garnering a lot of attention from the coaching staff in preseason camp.

Another Etienne?

Freshman running back Lyn-J Dixon has taken Clemson football fall camp by storm. He has been extremely explosive in both scrimmages and in practices.

So much so that Dabo Swinney has compared the freshman to Travis Etienne and even said that Dixon is farther along in pass-blocking than Etienne was last year. With those thoughts in mind, we received a question asking us if Dixon could take over that second-string running back spot in 2018?

While I don’t think that Dixon will surpass either Feaster or Choice on the depth chart, there is a good chance that we start to see him more and more as the season progresses.

If he takes 3-4 carries a game and turns those into efficient rushes of the ball and if Feaster and Choice don’t show improvement from last season, he could start to carry the ball more than the two veterans.

We know that they will both see their fair share of playing time, but there’s certainly room for another play-maker on the field, especially if Dixon is anything like Etienne.

Right now, I still believe that he will be fourth in the pecking order because I think that we will see Feaster and Choice take steps forward, but if they don’t, Dixon will be waiting in the wings ready to play.
