Clemson football will travel to College Station for the second game of the season to play Texas A&M. An Athlon analyst recently predicted an upset.

Clemson football comes into the 2018 season as the preseason favorite to make the College Football Playoff.

The Tigers return an elite defensive line with plenty of talent to go along with them on that side of the ball. On offense, Clemson has some of the best playmakers in the country in Travis Etienne and Tee Higgins, as well as an experienced offensive line.

Athlon Analyst Nick Cole recently released his predictions for the “Biggest Upsets in the SEC in 2018.” His No. 1 upset was Texas A&M over Clemson.

Upset Alert?

Cole points out that this game is in the second week of the season and that Jimbo Fisher is 4-4 overall against Clemson. He says that Texas A&M has plenty of talent and, with a surprise roster and home field advantage, the Aggies might have what it takes to take down Clemson early in the season.

Those are valid points, but I just think you can’t disregard the fact that the changes that might “take Clemson by surprise” are brand new to Texas A&M’s athletes as well. The Aggies are going to be transitioning from an up-tempo spread offense to a pro-style offense. Who says they even have the personnel to run that style of offense effectively?

When I look at this game, here’s what I see: A solid Texas A&M team with some pieces against an elite Clemson team.

The Aggies will be pumped up and ready to go. Unfortunately for them, though, that juice will run out after the first half. You can’t win a game on emotion and there are just no football reasons to think that they can upset Clemson.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Clemson doesn’t show up to play, but if the Tigers do they should be able to take care of business and be just fine.
