Clemson football defensive coordinator Brent Venables set the record straight about the summer depth chart Tuesday at Dabo Swinney’s Media Golf Outing.

We all put too much stock in the Clemson football depth chart when it is released.

You see every single media outlet over analyze every single aspect of it from the first-string quarterback to the third-string long snapper.

What you have to realize, though, is that the depth chart changes and doesn’t really mean much to the coaches.

The depth chart that the public sees isn’t necessarily the same thing that coaches use depending week-to-week. It is, however, a good gauge to know where guys stand.

With that being said, there was a small error- according to Brent Venables- in the Clemson football summer depth chart.

Clemson Football Summer Depth Chart:

In an interview with WCCP FM- 105.5 The Roar, Venables was asked about the decision to start Kendall Joseph at middle linebacker (MIKE) and for Tre Lamar to be listed as a sub.

Venables was quick to say that he made a mistake. He said that he meant to put an “or” in between the two to signify that they were co-starters, but simply made a typo.

In the eyes of the defensive coaching staff, Tre Lamar is without a doubt a starter.

Just as we have said all along, Lamar will see starter snaps. Venables also went on to say that he was really impressed with the quality of linebackers that the Tigers possessed.

J.D. Davis, Kendall Joseph, Tre Lamar, Jamie Skalski, Isaiah Simmons and Shaq Smith will all see playing time.

I think we’ll see Joseph play a little bit on the inside and the outside. You’ll see Isaiah Simmons play a role similar to Dorian O’Daniel’s in 2017. Tre Lamar will anchor that MIKE spot quite and bit and then you’ll see J.D. Davis on the opposite side with a mixture of guys like Smith, Skalski and even Mike Jones Jr. making appearances.

This linebacker group is deep and I really like what I see out of them.

This could, in fact, be the best linebacker corp that Venables has had during his time at Clemson. It will be interesting to see how these guys are utilized and who steps up to create that depth.
