Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney held his annual Media Golf Outing Tuesday. Here is our news, notes and analysis coming out of the event.

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney held his annual Media Golf Outing at The Reserve at Lake Keowee Tuesday.

The coaches were made available to the media and answered a variety of questions.

After interviews, everyone took to the golf course for an afternoon on the greens with beautiful scenery.

Here are our news, notes and analysis coming out of the annual outing.

Dabo Swinney Golf Outing Notes:

  • The Coaches Talk Quarterback

Obviously, the big question of the day had to do with the quarterback battle. Dabo Swinney very graciously said that Kelly Bryant is the starter, but that the margin between him, Trevor Lawrence and Chase Brice is then.

There was a lot of talk about a dual-QB system that would allow Lawrence to earn more playing time on the field with specialized running packages for Bryant throughout the season.

  • “All the right ingredients”

This may just be coach speak, but one interesting quote I found from Dabo Swinney was when he said that this Clemson football team has “all the right ingredients.”

This team has the talent, skill and depth to win it all. However, those ingredients have to mix together just perfectly. It’s a long season, but there’s certainly the capability to win a National Championship.

  • Hyatt beefing up, Carman slimming down

On the offensive line, it seems that Mitch Hyatt will be looking to gain some weight heading into the season. No one specified how much weight, but I think the coaches want him to play stronger than he did last season.

On the other hand, true-freshman Jackson Carman has reportedly lost 15-20 pounds, which should all but solidify him as an offensive tackle for this coming season.

  • Feaster playing at a healthy weight

Everyone is excited about sophomore Travis Etienne, but no one should forget about Tavien Feaster.

Feaster is said to be down to 215, which is perfect for his playing weight. He will still have plenty of strength, but should have that quick, explosive first step that we saw from him as a freshman.

Dabo compared Feaster to Jordan Leggett and said that he has to prove that he wants to be great. I think we see that from Feaster this season.

  • Quality Linebackers

Brent Venables is really excited about the depth that he has at linebacker. He said that Tre Lamar being listed as a backup was a typo. It’s really him and Kendall Joseph as co-starters at that MIKE position.

Basically, you’re going to see a healthy amount of rotation between Joseph, Lamar, Isaiah Simmons, J.D. Davis, Shaq Smith and Jamie Skalski at the linebacker position. You might even see Mike Jones Jr. or some others get valuable playing time.
