SB Nation ran a simulation of the World Cup of College Football. The publication had Clemson football winning the whole tournament.

SB Nation.com simulated an entire World Cup for CFB and had Clemson football winning the whole thing.

The publication used several metrics, including S&P stats and a randomizer, to determine winners.

Clemson was placed in a group with Memphis, Louisville, and Penn State.

According to the stats, the Tigers beat Louisville and Penn State, but lost to Memphis. They still won the Group, though, and moved on to the knockout stage of 16 teams.

Here’s a look at the 16 teams, according to the metrics:

  1. Michigan
  2. LSU
  3. UCF
  4. Washington
  5. Michigan State
  6. Florida Atlantic
  7. Ohio State
  8. Alabama
  9. Ohio
  10. TCU
  11. USF
  12. Auburn
  13. Virginia Tech
  14. Louisville
  15. Clemson
  16. Toledo

The Tigers, according to the simulator, defeated Toledo in the round of 16 before defeating Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Clemson football defeated USF before beating Ohio State in the championship game.

World Cup Madness…

Of course winning a simulated, made up World Cup doesn’t mean much, but it’s still interesting to think about here in the midst of the big world event- even if the U.S. isn’t participating.

I like this tournament because a lot of things happened in the simulator that would happen in a World Cup. Several big teams- such as Alabama- went down fairly early.

There were also groups that were tougher than others. Georgia and Bama were both grouped together, for example.

In the end, though, what I like most about it is that the good guys prevail.

Clemson wins and that’s enough for me. Obviously, it’s impractical and strange to think of a World Cup of College Football, but SB Nation certainly spent a lot of time thinking and simulating those metrics and it’s something just fun to think about here in the middle of July.
