Hunter Johnson announced that he would transfer out of the Clemson football program Monday. His decision says more about Trevor Lawrence than anything else.

Clemson football quarterback Hunter Johnson announced that he would be transferring out of the program Monday.

Johnson, a true-sophomore, was expected to compete for the starting position and be the second-string quarterback this coming year.

However, something didn’t sit right with Johnson after finding out his place on the depth chart.

Either he had already been surpassed by Trevor Lawrence or he could see the writing on the wall.

The truth of the matter, though, is that Hunter Johnson’s transfer says more about Trevor Lawrence’s talent and readiness than anything else.

Undeniable Talent…

I don’t know where Johnson sat on the depth chart following the spring. He very well may have been the second-string guy.

Even with that being said, he- just like 95 percent of Clemson football fans- could see the writing on the wall. A 5-star quarterback doesn’t just leave if he thinks he has a chance to be the starter. If he thinks he can beat out the guy who he’s placed in front of.

I mean, think about it. Johnson is going ahead and sacrificing his 2018 season to have two years somewhere else. All it would take is a Kelly Bryant injury or slip-up and you’d be on the field with a chance to prove yourself.

Then, next year it’d be you vs. Lawrence for the starting position straight-up.

I think he just knew the talent that Trevor Lawrence possesses. In my opinion, this also confirms that Trevor Lawrence isn’t just a talented guy, but that he is ready to play right now.

At the end of the day, Johnson’s transfer says more about Trevor Lawrence’s talent and readiness than it does him or anything else. We wish Hunter Johnson the best. He’s a very talented guy that is going to be a steal for another program.
