Clemson Football: Tiger find diamond in the rough with DT commitment
Clemson football received a commitment from 3-star defensive tackle Tayquon Johnson Monday afternoon. Here’s why the DT is a ‘diamond in the rough.’
The 2019 Clemson football recruiting class added another talented prospect to its commitment list Monday afternoon.
3-star defensive tackle Tayquon Johnson announced that he would be committing to Clemson at his school.
The Tigers were one of the first to offer him and it’s clear that Dabo Swinney and his staff made a great impression on Johnson, who is from Williamsport, Maryland.
While a 3-star commitment may not be the most exciting pickup to Clemson football fans, Johnson is clearly a ‘diamond in the rough’ for the Tigers.
A Diamond in the Rough…
When I watch Johnson’s film, I come away extremely impressed.
He may be a 3-star according to several recruiting services, but he has offers from Clemson, Alabama, and Georgia among others. When a prospect has offers from those programs, that tells me he is better than what his “stars” say.
Johnson has a motor that never stops and he looks like a monster on that defensive line. He is right around 295 currently and, in my opinion, he reminds me a little of Grady Jarrett with more upside and better measurables.
We’ve gotten questions as to whether Johnson could play on the offensive line.
From what we understand, Clemson recruited him as a defensive tackle. The Tigers do have a need to start building depth at DT since they will lose Christian Wilkins, Albert Huggins, and most likely Dexter Lawrence.
Next: Dabo Swinney would never fit into Alabama's culture
It will be fun to watch Johnson during his senior season before he comes to Clemson this coming year.
I think he’ll have a chance to get in there and make a name for himself early and, before it’s all said and done, I think Johnson could be a solid DT for the Tigers.
