Today we continue our analysis of Clemson football’s roster in 2018. Let’s take a look at the tight end position.

Clemson football won’t play another real opponent until next September, but, that doesn’t mean we can’t take a look at their roster heading into next season.

The Tight End position left much to be desired in 2017.

Unfortunately, Tiger fans virtually didn’t know that a tight end was on the field. Milan Richard led the tight ends with 18 catches for 210 yards and a touchdown.

Here’s a look at the projected depth chart heading into the spring.

Pre-Spring Projected Depth Chart

Starter: Milan Richard (Redshirt Senior)

  • Garrett Williams (Redshirt Junior)
  • Cannon Smith (Reshirt Senior)
  • J.C. Chalk (Redshirt Sophomore)
  • Braden Galloway (True Freshman)

Tight Ends Coach: Danny Pearman

2018 Position Outlook:

These guys will need to step up for Clemson football in 2018.

I expect that having Garrett Williams back, who suffered a torn ACL back in April of 2017, will be huge for the Tigers.

I’d also like to see J.C. Chalk, who was a highly regarded prospect, become more of a focal point for the Tigers.

One of the biggest storylines at this position, however, is true-freshman Braden Galloway.

Galloway comes in as a 3-star tight end prospect, but he looks like a gem, in my opinion. Galloway reminds me a lot of Jordan Leggett and I think, though he’s raw, he could step on campus and compete for snaps right away.

The Tigers need the tight ends to pave the way for running lanes, which they did well at times last year, but they also need them to be able to make key catches.

That element was missing from the offense in 2017 and I believe you’ll see that start to get worked back in here in 2018.

This is part of a series: Here’s our outlook at two other Tiger positions.
