Clemson football will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl. The game will decide much more than a trip to the national championship.

The Clemson football team will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on New Year’s Day in the Sugar Bowl.

This will be third matchup between the two programs in the past three years. The first two came in national championship games in which the teams split outcomes.

This year, they will play in the College Football Playoff semifinals with a trip to the national championship on the line.

While a trip to the national championship may be important, this game represents much more than that.

Battle for the College Football throne:

Look, no one’s going to argue the prestige of the Alabama football program over the years.

The Crimson Tide have a proud history and have ruled the world of College Football for almost a decade.

Since 2010, Alabama has won four national titles and played in five. Every year they didn’t end up there, they were in the conversation.

Fans for the last half-decade have compared their respective teams to Alabama. Coaches have attempted to build their programs to be as dominant as the Crimson Tide.

Alabama has become “the standard” of College Football. But, that could all change on New Year’s 2018.

Whether Alabama fans want to believe it or not, whispers are beginning that a new program may be slowly becoming the face of College Football.

That program is Clemson football, led by Dabo Swinney.

If Swinney beats Saban on New Year’s Day, Clemson isn’t just going to the national championship game, the Tigers have become the new standard in College Football- especially if they go on to win the championship.

Clemson has already proven that they’re not going anywhere. They are recruiting on a level of their own and are doing something that Alabama doesn’t do: They’re having fun.

If a recruit sees that Clemson is on the same level as Alabama and that the Tigers are actually having fun, why would they go to play under Nick Saban’s militaristic style of leadership?

Next: Can Swinney join rare company with 2nd straight win over Saban?

Alabama fans can believe whatever they want to, but New Year’s Day 2018 has a lot more on the line than a trip to the national championship game. It will be interesting to see how things unfold, but you very well may see more and more analysts start to talk about the Tigers becoming the new standard in College Football.
