Clemson football was ranked inside the top-four of the College Football Playoff committee’s first poll for 2017. Here’s our thoughts and analysis.

Clemson football entered the first 2017 College Football Playoff poll ranked No. 4 in the nation.

The Tigers suffered a loss to Syracuse a couple of weeks ago, but clearly that hasn’t hurt their resume with the committee.

Here’s the College Football Playoff committee’s top-10:

  1. Georgia
  2. Alabama
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Clemson
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Ohio State
  7. Penn State
  8. TCU
  9. Wisconsin
  10. Miami

Thoughts:

Clemson football has the best body of work of any team in the nation if you take away the loss. Unfortunately, with the loss I didn’t think the committee would have the Tigers inside the top-four.

I thought they would keep Ohio State and, possibly, Oklahoma ahead of them, but they surprised me.

I really started to believe that Clemson would be inside the top-four when I saw where Virginia Tech and Auburn were ranked.

The Hokies came in at No. 13 and Auburn at No. 14. That would make Clemson the only team with two wins over top-15 teams in this poll. The Tigers will still need a few things to play out for them to be inside the top-four when the season ends.

Obviously, they have to win out. I also think you want to see a couple of teams- like Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, or Ohio State- to falter in November.

We’re still a long way from the ultimate decision of who will play in the College Football Playoff, but it’s clear that the committee has their finger on the pulse of what’s going on and it seems that the Tigers will keep a better strength of schedule and record for the rest of the season over a team like Ohio State.
