We’re in the thick of football season, but basketball is right upon us. What are the chances Clemson basketball could snag 5-star SF Zion Williamson?
This is a strange article.
Normally, here towards the end of October we are talking one sport and one sport only: Football.
But, for some reason, there has been a strange infatuation with Clemson basketball and not just Clemson basketball, but Clemson basketball recruiting.
Why?
Because for the first time in a good while, the Tigers are seriously in the running for one of the nation’s top players.
Zion Williamson, a senior out of Spartanburg Day, has narrowed his list of schools to just a handful. Williamson is considering Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Clemson, and South Carolina.
From what we can gather, Williamson isn’t just extending a courtesy to Clemson or South Carolina. He is legitimately considering being a Tiger or Gamecock.
So, what does that mean for Clemson’s chances?
Analysis:
Right now- and I know this may be “bad luck” to say- I think Clemson is his favorite.
Zion Williamson canceled his official visit to UCLA after visiting Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky earlier. He has been to Clemson and South Carolina a number of times.
The biggest threat to the Tigers landing him would, most likely, be Duke at this point.
Brad Brownell can recruit him with the idea that he could come in and be the No. 1 option right away. That wouldn’t necessarily be the case at a Duke or Kentucky. At those schools, Williamson would be one of five or six 5-stars on campus.
There may also be incentive to go to the school just 30 minutes away from your house. His mother could see all of his games, as well as his supporters in the South Carolina area that have helped with AAU and other things as well.
Ultimately, it’s his decision. We all know that Williamson is a one-year rental no matter where he goes, but he could make a huge impact if he were to choose Clemson.
So, how much of a chance does Clemson have?
If I were to put a percentage on it, I’d say the Tigers have about a 60% chance to land the Spartanburg product. It’s hard to get inside the head of a high school athlete to see what they’re thinking.
