The Clemson football program flexed their defensive muscles in a hard-fought, 14-6 win over the 13th ranked Auburn Tigers.

On paper, Clemson football has one of the best defenses in the country. After their showing against Auburn last night, you can make the argument that Clemson has the best defense in the country.

The Tigers front seven dominated the game from start to finish, racking up 11 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Auburn quarterback, Jarrett Stidham had no time to stand in the pocket and survey the field. Even more impressive, was the fact that Auburn was unable to run the football, which is a staple of their offense.

While Clemson’s offense was not dominant, they did show promise. Quarterback, Kelly Bryant continued his success on the ground, gashing Auburn for two rushing touchdowns. The most impressive takeaway from Bryant’s performance was his toughness. Bryant battled back from an early injury to led the Tigers to a gritty win.

The ACC Network released the following highlight montage of Clemson’s physical contest with the Auburn Tigers.

Thoughts

Clemson’s secondary was a pleasant surprise last night. After getting off to a shaky start, the Tigers defensive backs began to smother Auburn’s wide receivers. Jarrett Stidham was unable to get anything going down the field.

With the Tigers’ talent on all three levels of the defense, there have little to no weaknesses. It will be difficult for opponents to scheme against Brent Venables’ with his widespread depth. This defense is undoubtedly championship caliber.

Offensively, Clemson must find an identity. With Kelly Bryant and a stable full of talented running backs, the Tigers have the weapons to punish opponents on the ground. I understand that this program has become known for their ability to throw the football, but, Bryant is most dangerous with his legs.

Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals will test this Tigers’ defense. Jackson is much improved as a passer and still contains his breakaway speed. This looks to be an exciting matchup.
