News recently broke that Gus Malzahn has named Jarrett Stidham Auburn’s starting quarterback. What does this mean for the Clemson football program in their week two matchup with the Tigers?

Stidham was perceived as the heavy favorite to land the starting job following his MVP performance in Auburn’s spring game. That being said, Malzahn held off on naming him the starter right then-and-there, because returning starter Sean White was out with an injury. White is well respected by his teammates and Malzahn, which is why he was given an opportunity to retain his job.

Significance for Clemson

While White is a fierce competitor, he is lacking as a passer. In last years matchup between the two, White went 10 of 21 attempts, for 140 yards and one interception; posting a 19.8 quarterback rating (QBR).

Stidham – though he hasn’t played in over a year – appears to be much more adept as a passer. Starting three games as a true freshman for Baylor, Stidham completed 68 percent of his passes for 1,265 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Under Gus Malzahn, this Auburn offense has been missing one key ingredient. A vertical passing attack. In 2016, Kamryn Pettway led the way for an Auburn offense who finished 6th in the country in rushing with over 270 yards per game on the ground. Unfortunately, Malzahn’s Tigers featured no balance, finishing the season 112th in passing offense with under 170 yards per game. Clemson’s defense smothered Auburn, routinely keeping eight men in the box to stop the run.

Stidham’s ability to push the ball down the field will keep this Clemson defense honest in 2017. Brent Venables is known for his aggressive play-calling. Bringing pressure, while it can be effective at rattling a quarterback, can also get you burnt deep.

Not only will Stidham open up Auburn’s passing attack, but, he will bolster their running game as well. The former Baylor star is not necessarily a threat with his legs, however, his arm will prevent Clemson from loading up the box to stop the run. This will give Auburn favorable numbers in the running game.

Fall Camp Update: Redshirt tracker 8/13

Auburn is going to be one of the Clemson football program toughest tests this season. There will be a boat-load of talent in the trenches on either side of the ball and some explosive playmakers on the edge. I’m anticipating another physical, low scoring affair in 2017.
