Apparently, Alabama’s backfield has gotten a little too crowded for former 2016 four star recruit B.J. Emmons. Emmons has officially left Tuscaloosa for Hutchinson(KS) Community College.

With Bo Scarborough and Damien Harris set to get most of the carries in 2017, Emmons knew that he would struggle to get on the field, so he transferred. He was also competing with sophomore Josh Jacobs and talented freshmen Najee Harris and Brian Robinson for playing time.

Emmons contributed as a true freshman until he hurt his foot against Texas A&M. Before the injury, he was able to rush for 173 yards in seven games and got a touchdown in the 38-10 win over Western Kentucky. He will now have to complete a year at Hutchinson before being able to sign with another school.

The Tigers are still trying to find a running back for 2018.

With recent recruitment activities like missing out on Zamir White who picked Georgia, offers to Ohio State commit Master Teague III, Tennessee commit Lyn-J Dixon and Asa Martin(IMG Academy, FL) who has a final three of Alabama, Auburn and Florida.

Clemson football should at least inquire about Emmons.

Plus, it will take a lot of work for Clemson to get Teague III, Dixon and Martin to change their minds, so Emmons could be a better option anyway. He might also be a better recruit because of his maturity and his skill set. At 6 foot and a solid 235 pounds, he is strong(425 lb bench press), has good speed(4.48) and catches the ball well out of the backfield. His strength allows him to consistently break tackles, and he is able to make defenders miss in the open field.

Emmons finished his senior year with 2,417 and 41 touchdowns. He was also a standout in 2015 Shrine Bowl game with 89 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.

Since he is from Freedom High in North Carolina, state schools UNC, N.C. State and East Carolina are expected suitors for the former All-State performer.

But during Emmons’s original recruitment none of those schools made his final list. He committed to Georgia, de-committed and then signed with Alabama over Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia Tech. Clemson never offered him but showed interest. He visited the campus several times.

Grades were an issue early in his scholastic career and later as a Georgia commit, he had a drug-related arrest. Grades issues and essentially having the number one 247sports all-purpose running back, Tavien Feaster, in their backyard is probably why the Tigers never offered. The drug charges were eventually dismissed.

If Emmons is fully recovered from his foot injury that required a second surgery earlier this year and gets qualified, then he could be a viable alternative to any of the other backs in the 2018 class.
