Clemson Football: Ten schools the Tigers should add to the schedule
By John Chancey
East Carolina Pirates
I have always liked ECU. I have a friend who went there and I have always admired their dedication to their football program.
The Tigers have never played the Pirates. Ever. This is shocking to me. I would have thought they would have played at least once given their proximity. In reality, Florida is only about an hour further away from Clemson than Greenville, North Carolina, but it still isn’t that far.
East Carolina is no stranger to Power Five teams from the region. They have a long rivalry with the North Carolina State Wolfpack and have also faced off against North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and South Carolina in recent years. They have also played West Virginia 21 times since 1970. East Carolina became the first non-power team to defeat teams from a Power conference (the ACC) six consecutive times from 2013 to 2016.
The program was founded in 1932. They played in the Southern Conference and as an independent before joining Conference USA in 1997. The Pirates now play in the American Athletic Conference, which is considered one of the best Group of Five conferences. They have been on the upswing in recent years under head coach Mike Houston.
