Five things we’ll always remember about Trevor Lawrence

Clemson football was blessed with a once-in-a-generation talent in the form of Trevor Lawrence and he certainly won’t soon be forgotten by Tiger nation.

Trevor Lawrence made an impact from Day One and will always hold a soft spot in the hearts of Tiger fans.

Here’s a look at five things we’ll always remember about Lawrence.

5. His leadership & character off the field

The first thing that will always come to my mind when I think about Trevor Lawrence is how he treated people and the legacy the he himself said was most important to leave at Clemson.

Lawrence showed love to people around him. He took time to get to know others and he went above and beyond the call of duty.

No one will forget about the way he promoted unity throughout not only his team, but the entire community and nation.

Lawrence was the unquestioned leader of this program. His teammates respected him and the fan base was proud of how he continued to handle himself and show love throughout his career- from start to finish.

You can’t talk about Trevor Lawrence without talking about how exceptional of a young man he has been since arriving here and how we’ve seen him grow into a man.

4. Winning machine (34-2 record)

Lawrence starting 36 total games and lost a grand total of two during his entire tenure at Clemson.

He leaves Tiger Town as the winningest quarterback in the history of the program and he’s one of the all-time great winners in College Football.

Three ACC Championships, three CFB Playoff appearances and a National Title. Lawrence finished his career with a perfect 2-0 record against in-state rival South Carolina- and we all know it would’ve been 3-0 had the SEC not chickened out- and that why the era of Lawrence will be characterized by one key word: Winning.

3. Saving the 2020 College Football season

It was the moment that changed the direction of the 2020 College Football season.

On August 8, quiet discussions behind-the-scenes about canceling the season were beginning to become loud yelling matches.

That’s when Lawrence posted a tweet that received more than 81,000 likes and got media organizations all across the nation talking in a different light for the first time all summer.

Say what you want to about decisions made, but the 2020 season doesn’t happen without Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence’s tweet and the subsequent #WeWantToPlay movement is what gave conference leadership the confidence and needed-support to move forward with playing despite the massive media firestorm that had built up to that point.

What’s more admirable about that? Lawrence was already the No. 1 overall pick in the coming draft. He didn’t need to play. His draft status wouldn’t be affected by the season, but yet he pushed as hard as anyone to make sure it happened.

2. Putting the team first despite his stardom

How many guaranteed first-rounders have we seen basically cruise through their junior season? We saw handfuls of guys choose to sit out the 2020 season and it would’ve made absolute sense for Lawrence to not risk his health just a year out from him earning millions of dollars.

But he didn’t. He put his team first and that’s why he wanted to play. Even when the Ohio State matchup was out of reach, Lawrence remained in the game and took some major shots as he battled to the end.

Why? Because he loved Clemson, he loved his coaches and he loved his teammates.

But it wasn’t just that.

Look at how Lawrence handled the media. It would’ve been really easy for him to talk about himself or his future in the NFL, but he always directed discussions back to the team. When he had success, he gave credit to everyone but himself. When he had failures- though there were only two losses- he took complete responsibility.

This is a guy who has known since high school that he was likely to be a No. 1 overall pick and, yet, his humility and poised demeanor is what we’ll all remember most about him.

1. Winning a National Championship as a freshman

There is only one quarterback to win a National Championship as the starter in the history of College Football not named Trevor Lawrence and that’s Jamelle Holieway.

Lawrence threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns against the Alabama Crimson Tide and led the Tigers to a dominant 44-16 victory. He was named the Offensive MVP and did his damage against an extremely talented group.

That’s a moment that Clemson football fans won’t forget any time soon.

Lawrence’s performance helped lead Clemson to its third National Championship in program history. While we know the Tigers are poised to be back for years to come, that still is the last National Championship we’ve been able to celebrate at the point of this writing and it’s a victory that should absolutely be remembered forever.
