One player most Clemson football fans have forgotten about is Cornell Powell. Could the redshirt junior have a breakout season at wide receiver?

One Clemson football player who we’ve heard very little about throughout the course of the spring and in fall camp is Cornell Powell.

Powell has been competing with fellow veterans Diondre Overton and TJ Chase for the starting slot wide receiver position throughout fall camp. Though Powell isn’t as lauded as some of the other Clemson football players, he still could be poised for a breakout season.

Powell (6-foot-0) is now up to 210 pounds and it’s clear that he spent the majority of last season in the weight room getting stronger and working on his hands.

Many Clemson football fans forget that Powell was a junior last season, but chose to redshirt to save a year of eligibility. Though many Tiger fans expected him to transfer, Powell chose to stick it out with the program and it looks as if he’ll play his final two seasons eligibility with the Tigers.

Right now, it’s expected that Diondre Overton will start in the slot until Amari Rodgers returns. At that point, Powell will have to compete for playing time behind Rodgers at the slot and with Overton, Frank Ladson, Joseph Ngata and TJ Chase in the wide receiver rotation as a whole.

He’ll have the opportunity in the first month of the season to prove that he deserves playing time.

We’re going to see a good amount of Cornell Powell in the first few games of the season, most likely splitting reps with Overton in the slot.

Many forget that the redshirt junior was a high-profile, prolific play-maker when he entered the Clemson football program a few years ago. The only thing that’s for sure is that he will finally have the opportunity to live up to that bill in 2019.

Powell is going to get on the field and he will have a chance to become a steady part of the Tiger wide receiver rotation. Don’t be surprised if you see his name called on a much more regular basis this season for Clemson.
