Is Clemson football quarterback Trevor Lawrence the favorite to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy? He certainly is among the leaders.

Our friends over at Saturday Blitz released their way-too-early rankings for the 2019 Heisman Trophy.

Among their list was two Clemson football players: Running Back Travis Etienne and Quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

So, it certainly begs the question: Could Trevor Lawrence be a favorite to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy? The short answer is yes.

Unfortunately for Lawrence, there are two quarterbacks who will currently start off higher on the list than him and that’s Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins.

The good thing is that Ohio State may be in bit of a transition year with a new coach and that may allow Lawrence a shot to move up. I think he’ll have an easier time moving up the Heisman list than Etienne for a couple reasons:

  1. He’s a quarterback
  2. The nation has gone crazy over him

ESPN and all the major networks have spotlighted Trevor Lawrence since he became the starting quarterback for Clemson football. The freshman is going to have the publicity angle working for him.

The first major reason that he’ll have a better chance than Etienne to win the Heisman is that he’s a quarterback. You have to remember that the Heisman is a voter-based award. That means they look at stats and go with trends, they don’t necessarily pick the best player.

Because of that, Lawrence is going to have a great chance to at least compete for the award. If his stats are similar to Tagovailoa’s and he leads Clemson back to the CFB Playoff again next year, I think it’ll be a neck-and-neck race for who ends up winning the award.

Next. Clemson assistants can expect salary increases. dark

Right now, I’d tend to still favor Tagovailoa and probably even Dwayne Haskins at this point this early on, but I certainly believe there’s room for Trevor Lawrence to enter the discussion in a big way, especially depending on what he does this postseason.
