Trenton Thompson, a defensive tackle from Georgia and the No. 1 prospects in the nation to most recruiting services, has named a top four. The Clemson Tigers made the list.
Clemson already has the No. 3 recruiting class in the nation in 247 Sports’ composite rankings. Obviously, landing Thompson could only improve that ranking. In addition to Clemson, Thompson also named Georgia, Alabama, and USC, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Said Thompson:
Georgia is still my leader, but people are pushing hard to knock them off the top. Alabama is getting close. USC was a great visit, and they’re getting close. I like Clemson, Auburn and Florida State a lot.
Right now, I think it’s Georgia, USC, Alabama and Clemson at the top. Then Florida State and Auburn are not far behind.
So Georgia is still the odds-on favorite to land Thomson, who has apparently come close to committing a couple times. And even while naming a top four, Thompson could not resist naming a couple extra schools. It sounds like there is still a long way to go in his recruiting process and his favorites are far from fixed. In fact, Trenton suggested that a commitment may still be months away.
I’m probably going to wait until after the season to commit. I just want to help out my teammates. If I wait, the college coaches can come see my teammates play during the season. They’ll get looked at, so I’m probably going to hold out.
Thompson is a consensus five-star recruit and the No. 1 overall prospect in 247 Sports’ composite rankings. As you might expect, in addition to the schools he named, Thompson has offers from most of the top programs in the country. And as solid as Clemson’s recruiting class already is, landing Thompson would be a huge get for Dabo Swinney and the staff, particularly as the Tigers head towards a future without Vic Beasley and Grady Jarrett in 2015.
